If you've ever pulled up a garlic crop by hand in heavy clay, you know why the harvesters exist — and why they're not all created equal. - Stony soils punish cheap blades. Rocks and gravel wear the digging shares fast and snap tines if the depth is set too aggressive.
2. Sandy Soil — The Easy Win (and the Hidden Trap)
Sandy and sandy-loam fields are where garlic harvesters earn their reputation. The soil is loose at moistures between 12 and 18%, so the FOYA unit barely has to work. I've seen operators run a 120 mm digging depth in sand and pull out essentially every bulb intact.
The trap with sand is overspeeding. Because it's easy digging, operators push forward speed and forget the crop is sitting close to the surface. 4. Loam — Where Everything Just Works

- Budget for wear parts. On stony soils, digging shares and tines are consumables, not optional spares. Keep a set on hand.

7. The Damage Rate Question Nobody Asks
Every buyer asks about capacity and price; almost nobody asks about the damage profile — which cloves get damaged and how many. For a crop sold on size and appearance, a few bruised outer cloves can knock a whole lot out of premium grade.
