A harvest window is short and unforgiving. Once grain moisture drops into the safe range and the crop is ready, you have perhaps 7 to 14 working days to get it in — and every day of delay is a day of risk from rain, lodging, shattering, and field losses. A harvester, baler, thresher or reaper that is checked four weeks ahead gives you time to order parts, correct problems in the workshop, and prove the fix with a dry run. Put simply: a day of scheduled inspection is cheaper than a day of unscheduled breakdown, and both are cheaper than a spoiled crop. A few of these deserve a note. On bearings, buy a simple infrared thermometer — it converts "feels warm" into a number you can compare across the season and across machines. On hydraulics, oil colour tells you more than oil level: amber is healthy, milky means water, and dark with a burnt smell means heat damage. On screens and sieves, clean them on a dry day when you have time, not in the field when the crop is waiting.

The Dry Run — Acceptance Criteria

Before the machine goes into the crop, run it empty. A dry run at rated PTO or engine speed for 10–15 minutes with guards closed and nobody entering the danger zone will expose almost every fault you did not find by hand. Accept the machine only when all of the following hold:

Record these parameters each season so you can compare: engine rpm at working speed, PTO rpm, hydraulic system pressure, bearing temperatures at the main shafts, engine hours at inspection, and the date each consumable was replaced.

Three Checks That Get Skipped — and What They Cost

Hub bolt torque and wheel bearing play. These are almost never touched until a wheel wobbles, and a loosened hub on a loaded trailer or harvester can shear studs and drop a machine mid-field. Torquing every hub once a season takes twenty minutes.

Hydraulic oil condition, not just level. A full reservoir of contaminated oil looks reassuring. Water ingress and dust accelerate pump and valve wear, and a pump failure is one of the most expensive repairs on any hydraulically controlled harvester.

PTO shaft guard and clutch function. A missing or seized guard is both an injury risk and, where the clutch has locked up, a shock load that reaches the gearbox every time the machine hits a blockage. The guard costs little; the gearbox costs a lot.

How far in advance should I inspect harvest machinery before the season starts?

Start four weeks before your expected harvest date. Week 4 is for major items that may need ordered parts (blades, bearings, belts, hydraulic hoses, filters).
